Six Tips for Summer Accident and Disaster Preparedness

The days are growing longer and warmer on the Atlantic coast. That means tourism season – and hurricane season – are almost upon us. Summer 2022 is predicted to be record breaking both in terms of travel and significant weather events. Whether you are concerned about slips and falls or a Category 5 storm, below are six tips to help mitigate potential harm to your business, your employees, and your customers when disaster strikes:

Assess your risks. First, identify the potential risks and hazards specific to your business. Think about your location, layout, operations, and clientele. For example, is your building in a flood zone? Do you stock food subject to spoilage? Is your establishment kid-friendly? Considering your business’s particular attributes will go a long way in helping you prepare for any accidents that may occur.

Make a plan. Next, create written policies and procedures tailored to the risks and hazards identified. Stress caused by emergency situations can affect decision making and judgment. Having a written plan can dramatically reduce chaos and confusion, saving property, equipment, and lives. Periodically review the policies with your employees, and revise them if necessary.

Train your employees. Employees must be familiar with and trained regularly on the policies and procedures in place. Depending on the type of risk involved, it may be beneficial to run simulations or drills. Every employee should know their roles and responsibilities in a time of crisis.

Document, document, document. Proper recordkeeping is essential to risk management. Maintain records of employee training. Record incidents when they occur so you can appropriately evaluate your policies and decide if they need updating. Consider taking photographs and/or videos of your establishment so you are prepared if you need to file an insurance claim.

Safeguard information. It is vital to ensure sensitive business records and customer information stay protected. With cybersecurity threats on the rise, make sure your technology is up to date. Use different passwords for different accounts. Instruct your employees not to open suspicious emails or attachments. Separate your public Wi-Fi network from the business Wi-Fi. Check your insurance. Confirm you have proper insurance coverage. Commercial property insurance can cover damage to your building and its contents due to a fire or storm. Flood insurance can cover losses caused by flooding. Liability insurance can protect you if an allegation is made against you by an injured patron. Are your employees covered by workers’ compensation insurance if they are injured on the job? Cyber insurance can also help protect you in the event of a cyberattack.

The above is by no means a complete list of everything that you can do to prepare for an accident or disaster; however, considering these steps can give you a start for deciding what your business needs and help prevent further loss or injury in the event of a disaster.

SERVPRO of Cape May County Participates in "Have a Heart for Our Veterans" Initiative.

This past February, SERVPRO of Cape May County along with the United Methodist Church communities in Southern New Jersey, area service organizations and local businesses took part in the “Have a Heart for Out Veterans” initiative. Donations of clothing, snacks and hygiene items were collected and given to the residents of the Veterans Memorial Home in Vineland, New Jersey. Over 300 veterans received a “Have a Heart” bag.

Harold Lapp, Jr., our business development representative said, “We hope this gesture shows our great pride for American veterans. Every time we think of our freedoms – we think of our veterans, and say thank you. We’re honored to support the men and women who so bravely served our great country. They may not think of themselves this way, but to all of us at SERVPRO, they are Heroes.

The gratitude from our veterans is clear as is mentioned in the letter received thanking those who took part in this very special Valentine initiative. God bless America and our Veterans!

Air Duct and HVAC Cleaning: Our Franchise Professionals can inspect your HVAC system and duct work. Cleaning services can be provided to help restore peak energy efficiency, eliminate offensive odors, and improve indoor air quality.

The SERVPRO® difference means:

  • Vent covers and returns are removed and thoroughly cleaned to remove any build-up that has accumulated.

  • A highly-trained technician will attach a high-powered vacuum system to your air duct system. This will create a vacuum in your ducting and returns, and pulls the collected debris to our filtration system. Air is filtered through a HEPA filtration system, removing 99.97% of particles in the air stream.

  • Going to each vent, we use a specialty tool to agitate and remove debris from each branch of the duct work. We select the tool we use based on your type of ducting. These can include compressed air or a whip, that uses “tentacles” to agitate years of debris.

  • While your system is still under vacuum pressure, we mist in an EPA registered antimicrobial agent into the duct work. This is the same agent we use during water damage or mold remediation losses. By using this, we help eliminate mold and bacteria.

  • Finally, duct sealer is applied to create a mold and mildew resistant barrier between living and non-living spaces.

In the event that your important documents end up wet during a flood or storm event in your home or business we can help dry them so that you can retain all important information! 

Documents are frozen and shipped to our corporate offices in Tennessee where they are placed in a drying chamber where four different drying services are used.  Vacuum Freeze Drying, Gamma Irradiation, Digitizing, and Certified Destruction. The entire process usually takes between 7-10 days depending on the severity of the damage.

SERVPRO's Facilitator Training Program (FTP) was developed to ensure all SERVPRO Continuing Education (CE) instructors understand CE course requirements, are subject matter specialists, and have the presentation skills needed to effectively represent the SERVPRO Brand in front of an audience of clients and potential clients.

SERVPRO guarantees that only Certified CE instructors will teach SERVPRO CE Courses.

After completing the FTP training, the participant must also complete two in-person course observations and three video course observations. Before teaching their first CE Class, the participant must have observed the class in-person.

First-time instructors mus be observed by an Active Instructor/certified SERVPRO CE instructor. include a series of course observations in person.
